Netflix users are being encouraged to discover a "hidden gem" of a horror film that offers "Scream vibes" and an "unexpected twist" ending.

Cult favorite Urban Legend is now accessible on the streaming service. First released in 1998, it followed the success of the original Scream movie in 1996.

While it shares many similarities with Scream, including premise and style, many fans consider it one of the superior titles inspired by the now classic franchise. The plot centers around a series of murders happening in and around a university campus, leading student Natalie to believe that each death is inspired by various urban legends, which seem to be coming true due to a sinister killer.

Numerous aspects of the horror film pay homage to the 1990s, particularly through its cast. Notably, a young Michael Rosenbaum makes an appearance, who would go on to gain fame for his role as Lex Luthor in the television series Smallville.

Accompanying him is a young Joshua Jackson, recognized for his role in Dawson's Creek, alongside Tara Reid and Jared Leto. Additionally, there's a special appearance by horror icon Robert Englund, famed for portraying Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series.

While Urban Legend may not have impressed critics upon its release, it has gradually secured a special status among fans over the years. Some refer to it as a "hidden treasure," whereas others celebrate it as "iconic" in today's context.

A fan took to the internet to express their excitement, saying, "This is a fantastic slasher thriller! While it definitely has the same feel as Scream since it’s another teen slasher, I have to admit that I enjoy this film even more than the Scream series."

One more viewer chimed in with praise, saying, "This is an awesome film to enjoy with friends! It's quick-moving, packed with unexpected moments, and features fantastic cameos from horror icons like Robert Englund and Brad Dourif. While it’s not excessively gory, it does deliver on violence and suspense! If you're looking for deeply unsettling horror, this isn't the one for you. However, if you're in the mood for some entertaining 90s horror, this has everything you need. Where else can you see Joshua Jackson as a mischievous prankster with bleached hair or Tara Reid as a radio DJ?"

Many fans applauded the film's intriguing murder mystery, with one viewer commenting, "The twist at the end caught me off guard! This is definitely one of the top slashers from the 90s. The unexpected turn keeps it exciting as you try to figure out which legends will be featured and which character will sadly meet their demise."
