Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was reportedly stabbed during a confrontation with an intruder at his residence in Mumbai.

India’s Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan was in surgery on Thursday for six stab injuries received in a scuffle with an intruder at his home in Mumbai.

The son of former India cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore, 54-year-old Khan is among the country’s most bankable stars, having featured in more than 70 films and television series, in some also as a producer.

He lives in an apartment in the western suburb of Bandra, along with his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, who is also an actor, and their two children, Jeh and Taimur.

Khan was transported to a local hospital around 3:30 am on Thursday, suffering from six injuries, including two that were more severe than the others and one located near his spine, according to news agency ANI, which referenced statements from Niraj Uttamani, the hospital's chief operating officer.

"A minor foreign object near the spine has been detected," the official reported. "He is presently in surgery... We will have a clearer understanding of the damage once the operation is finished."

Khan's representatives have confirmed that he underwent surgery following the burglary attempt, according to media reports; however, they have not yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters.

According to media reports, police have launched an investigation into the incident and are actively searching for the attacker, who escaped the scene.

Movie stars and opposition politicians have urged for enhanced security measures.

Clyde Crasto, spokesperson for the Nationalist Congress Party led by Sharad Pawar, expressed on the messaging platform X, “If prominent individuals with ... security can be assaulted in their own residences, what risks do ordinary citizens face?”

In the elections held in November, India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its coalition partners emerged victorious.

In the western Indian state of Maharashtra, which has Mumbai as its capital.

Actor and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt has advocated for an increased police presence in the suburban area that houses many members of the film industry.

"The city, particularly the crown jewel of the suburbs, has never seemed so perilous," she expressed on X, referencing a well-known term for the fashionable neighborhood.
